Digital Citizenship (DC) in our school is about having the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to demonstrate responsible and respectful behaviour when using technology or participating in digital environments.
We are committed to preparing our students to thrive in the 21st century. Digital citizenship is key to helping CBE students learn to use available technology responsibly to enable them to reach their full potential as learners.
All students and staff are required to abide by Administrative Regulation 1062 – Responsible Use of Electronic Resources.

West Springs Students Learn and Practice Digital Citizenship
Digital literacy and digital citizenship are important components of education represented throughout the Alberta Program of Studies. Every year our teachers review digital citizenship and bring positive awareness and age appropriate strategies to classes. Digital citizenship is not a single lesson or unit nor is it centred on a specific technology. Rather, it is a comprehensive approach to respectful and ethical use of digital technologies that spans student education from K-12 and into adulthood. Digital citizenship is practiced in every class throughout the school. Students approach all use of technology with a strong understanding of good digital citizenship practices in mind.
Teachers review digital safety and security expectations, digital communication procedures, and skills needed for research and educational projects. In all cases, technology access and use takes place under teacher supervision. Watch for more specific information about digital citizenship in grade D2L postings.
Digital Citizenship at the CBE
Digital citizenship is about using technology and participating in digital environments. It is key to helping our students learn to use available technology responsibly in the classroom and beyond. Our school has a Digital Citizenship Plan that is updated annually, addressing how we work to build a community where we live and work together as digital citizens.

Personal Mobile Devices
Student personal mobile devices are limited or restricted at all schools, unless required for health or medical needs, to support specialized learning needs, and for educational purposes. Learn more about our BYOD (bring your own device) rules.
Web Filtering & Social Media
Inappropriate or unsafe content may be blocked to provide a safe environment: some content is blocked for all users, and other content may be suitable for older students but not for younger ones. Student access to known social media platforms is blocked on school networks and school devices for all grade levels.
