Parent-teacher conferences are an opportunity to engage in conversation about your child’s learning. Parents/guardians and teachers are able to connect face-to-face and communicate openly about student learning, especially with respect to areas of strength and areas of growth. They help build and sustain respectful relationships that allow both parties to share information and develop strategies to support student success.

Student-Led Conferences

Dear Families,

On November 23rd and 24th, during student-led conferences, your child will be showcasing their learning with you. Students will lead the conversation regarding their learning with opportunities for you to ask questions and discuss next steps in learning. Please allow a 30-minute time slot for each child to ensure you have time to examine artifacts of learning with your child. Teachers will be available to help direct the conversation and answer questions that you may have in a semi-private space (several families will be in the room). If you require more privacy than the classroom allows, please be sure to let the teacher know. We have several goals in utilizing this format.

Student-led conferences allow you to “see” rather than just be “told” about your child’s progress, allowing for more informed conversation with both your child and their teacher. In addition, students develop agency in their learning, growing their ability to share what they know, how they know it and what they need next, as is developmentally appropriate. “Research shows that when students are involved in the assessment process - learning to articulate what they have learned and what they still need to work on - achievement improves.” (Black & William, 1998; Stiggins, 2001 as cited in Davies, 2001)

Student-Parent-Teacher Conferences are an important part of your child(ren)’s learning experience. We have three scheduled face-to-face meetings to discuss student progress each year. These occur in September, November and March, and are an opportunity to discuss your child(ren)’s progress, to see evidence of learning tasks and to discuss next steps in learning. Students are an important part of these discussions. Should you require a private conversation regarding learning with your child’s teacher, please feel free to book an appointment at another time. Two written report cards are distributed; the first in early January and the second, in June.
