West Springs School is committed to creating an exemplary environment for learning where students, parents and staff engage in a rigorous curriculum designed for today and the future. Central to this work is the development of significant relationships among children and adults as we strive for excellence in the areas of academics, personal development, character and citizenship.
Environmental Stewardship
LEED Building - West Springs is certified as a “LEED” building with silver status. This means that our school has met environmental standards for energy conservation provided through heating, electrical, and water management systems. We have motion sensors for lights, toilets, and ambient room heating.
School Initiatives
Regular collection of:
- Refundables
- Recycleables
- Composting
Focused efforts to develop an awareness of, and to reduce our environmental footprints:
- Looking for eco-friendly alternatives to plastic bogs/containers
- Reducing landfill waste
- Multiple/creative re-uses of a variety of products
Recycling and Composting - West Springs staff and students also practice environmental stewardship through our recycling and composting programs. Bins throughout the school collect recyclables including paper, cardboard and plastic waste. We ask students to recycle lunch items such as yogurt containers which are rinsed and placed in classroom recycling bins.
By far, the greatest waste from the school is the volume of paper towels used in washrooms so last year we also started a school-wide composting program. We participate in the CBE composting program and now all of the paper towels from washrooms are collected and sent for composting.

Our School's Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation
We are committed to acknowledging and supporting the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission 94 Calls to Action specific to education. Our school, along with all CBE schools, made a Truth and Reconciliation Commitment to Action, on June 21, we renewed our commitment.

School Development Plan
Each year, our school prepares a development plan with input from teachers, school staff, students and parents. We review many sources of data, including report cards, provincial achievement test results and school surveys. Based on this information, we create our plan identifying targeted areas for growth. Our school development plan is not meant to represent all of the work that takes place in our school, but rather it focuses on specific areas for improvement.

School Improvement Results Report
Our school also prepares a results plan, which looks at our previous school year. It shows our students’ achievement and progress in meeting the goals and outcomes as set out by the CBE and Alberta Education, outlines some of the highlights of our school development plan and gives an overview of our school. You can look on the CBE website for system-wide results.
