Visitors to the School
Front door/safety and security:
In order to improve safety and security for staff and students, West Springs School has installed a front camera and doorbell. Now, like other CBE schools, the front door will be locked at all times. We still want you to feel welcome!
To access the office, please ring the grey bell/intercom on the far left side (as you are facing the school). During office hours 8:30-4:30 Monday to Thursday and Friday 8:30-1:00, someone will unlock the door and you will be able to present yourself at the office. Due to the nature of our work, staff may not be readily available to open the door right away. Thank you in advance for your patience. Maple Roots families will still access the building in the regular manner outside of office hours.
During the school day, all exterior doors, except for the main entrance, are locked while students are in classes. At all times, visitors are required to report to the school office, sign in and wear a nametag to identify themselves. If you are taking your child from school during the day, please come to the school office. We will call your child so that you may sign them out. Teachers will not release students from the classroom unless they have been notified by the office.
Dismissal
Please arrange to meet your children outside at a designated location or near their entrance doors at dismissal times. All students are expected to use the assigned doors to enter and exit the building.
Lockdowns
All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.
Evacuation Procedures
In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.
Video Surveillance Technology
The Calgary Board of Education may install and use video surveillance technology at select schools to support maintaining a safe and secure environment and to help control vandalism and criminal activity on school property.
Personal information gathered by video surveillance is collected under the authority of the Education Act and the Protection of Privacy Act section 4. The users of this information are the principal or designate and law enforcement personnel in the case of reported incidents that would require an investigation. Only authorized persons will review video surveillance information.
This technology is considered a complement to, and not a replacement for, CBE's strategies in supporting a welcoming, caring, safe, and respectful learning and work environment for students and staff.
Approval, installation and use of video surveillance technology will comply with Administrative Regulation 1066.
For questions or concerns, please contact the school principal.
