Lunch Supervision

If your child is registered for the lunch supervision program but will be absent during the lunch hour please ensure you call the school at 403-777-6244 with instructions. A parent or guardian must sign out all students leaving the school from the lunch program. We need to know that your child is safe with you.

For more information, please visit our Lunch Supervision page.

Please note that microwaves, hot water, and cutlery are NOT provided.

As the lunch period is a part of the school day, the same behaviour is expected of the children as outlined in the Code of Conduct section of this website. The consequence of not following the expectations outlined by the lunch program supervisors will be a phone call to parents, temporary suspension, or permanent removal from the program.

Nut-Aware Environment

Some students in our school have serious allergies to products containing nuts. We would appreciate your support in eliminating nut products from foods sent to school. Students are asked not to "swap" or "share" snacks.

Allergies/Medications

The school office must be advised of medications that students are taking while at school. This includes regularly administered medications and those required for emergencies. For everyone's safety, NO MEDICATION IS TO BE STORED IN BACKPACKS OR DESKS. Medication will be stored in the office. Epipens and/or puffers should be worn by the student to ensure timely administration of medication, should it become necessary. It is the parents’ responsibility to ensure that medications such as Epipens are replaced prior to their expiry date. School personnel are not authorized to dispense medicine to a child without written consent. Appropriate forms are available in the main office. All requests must be updated yearly. Please Note: School personnel cannot administer over the counter medications like Tylenol, Aspirin, first aid creams, etc. and do not keep them in the school.

Lunch and Snack Composting

We ask students to take uneaten lunch items home so that parents are aware of the food left uneaten by their children.

Playground Supervision

Supervision of students on the playground is provided at 8:55 am and over the lunch period. To ensure student safety, students are requested not to arrive at school prior 8:55 am. Students using the playground after 3:40 pm are assumed to have parental permission and supervision. We encourage students to report home immediately after school.

Birthday Snacks

We request that shared birthday snacks are not brought in for student birthdays due to so many allergies and student health restrictions.

Home-Packed Lunch Tips for Parents

Lunch is an important part of your child’s day at school. Here are some tips to help you provide a lunch that is safe and nutritious with less waste.

Food Safety

  • Keep cold food cold by using an insulated lunch bag and 1-2 ice packs.
  • Keep hot food hot by using an insulated container. Preheat your container with boiling water before adding hot food. Microwave ovens are not available for elementary students.
  • Pack non-perishables, such as granola bars and whole fruit, that can be kept at room temperature.
  • Most CBE schools are nut-aware, please check with your child’s teacher for more information on nut allergies and other allergies in your child’s classroom.

Help Reduce Waste

  • Bring a reusable water bottle.
  • Pack just enough for a child to eat during lunch.
  • Many schools participate in “boomerang lunches” (pack in/pack out), where all leftover items are returned home.

Tip: Pack a sealable bag or container labeled ‘garbage’ for uneaten food or open containers to avoid mess in the lunch bag.

In 2024, ten CBE schools participated in a waste audit conducted by Green Calgary. Here are a few suggestions from the audit to help minimize waste produced by packed lunches:

  • Send less selections of food. Younger children have difficulty deciding what to eat when there is a lot of choice and sometimes end up not eating.
  • When possible, use reusable containers for foods such as crackers and cut up fruits or vegetables.

Other Tips

  • Make sure your child can open all packages by themselves.
  • Involve your child in packing their lunch. Children involved in food preparation may be more likely to try new foods and eat what is packed, minimizing food waste.
  • Aim to include a food from each food group – lean proteins, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables should be eaten daily (as per Canada’s Food Guide 2019).
  • Some items, such as sandwiches, can be made ahead and frozen to save time. Note that some fillings such as fresh vegetables do not freeze well.
  • Designate a shelf in the fridge/pantry at home for lunch items. This may help make packing lunches quicker and encourage independence for children packing their own lunches.
