Dear West Springs Families,
General Reminder: If your child will be absent or late, or if there is a change to a registered bus rider after school plans, the office must be notified.
Absences and lates: Please call the office and leave a message on the 24-hour absence line 403-777-6244 extension 1.
CBE School Bus change of plans: Parents are asked to email westsprings@cbe.ab.ca, or call the office, extension 0 during office hours. We ask that parents do not email directly to teachers as messages will not be seen during instructional hours and it's possible the teacher is away.
Regular Attendance at School is Important!
Did you know?
■ By grade 3, students with regular attendance are more likely to read at grade level.
■ By grade 6, regular attendance is a predictor of high school completion.
■ By grade 9, regular attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than test scores.
■ Students who attend daily are less likely to fall behind in school.
■ Concerns with school attendance may indicate other challenges in a student’s life.
■ Regular school attendance is an important life skill on the path to graduation and future employment.
Tips for improving your child’s school attendance:
■ Listen and show an interest in your child’s day.
■ Encourage your child to do well in school and praise their success.
■ Help your child maintain daily routines such as, eating breakfast, turning off electronics two hours before bedtime and going to bed early.
■ If possible, try to schedule dental and medical appointments after school hours or on days off from school.
■ Send your child to school unless sick.
■ It may be a concern if your child is often sick, complains about going to school and/or struggles with schoolwork.
■ Ask for help from the school before the problem gets too big. No problem is too small.
Terry Fox Thank you: An Ambassador from The Terry Fox Foundation presented a special assembly at our school on Monday, and we are very proud to share Terry Fox’s story with our school community.
At the age of 18, Terry Fox was diagnosed with bone cancer and was forced to have his right leg amputated. Determined to help others suffering from cancer, he decided to run across Canada to raise funds for cancer research. Terry ran a marathon a day for 143 days before his cancer returned, forcing him to end his Marathon of Hope. Terry passed away on June 28, 1981, but his legacy had only just begun. Inspired by his perseverance, Canadians picked up his Marathon of Hope and continued running towards his goal — a dream of a world without cancer.
This year marks the 46th anniversary of Terry's Marathon of Hope, and Canadians from coast to coast are coming together for the "Finish It" campaign — a call to action to help finish what Terry started. Watch the powerful short film FINISH IT, and be reminded of the impact one person can make.
Terry Fox started a marathon against cancer. Together, we can end it.
Today, the future of cancer research is brighter than ever. Lives are transformed as more Canadians hear, “We can treat your cancer successfully.
