Dear Families,
Thank you to those of you who joined us for our Remembrance Day Ceremony today. The following grade 4 students lead us in this important service to remember those who have fought and sacrificed for our freedoms in Canada and across the world: Emilie, Ellis, Sydney, Violet, Ariana, Courtney, Josie, Crystal, Brynn, Avery, Amaya. Thank you students! You did an excellent job and we are very proud of you.
Enjoy a safe and restful Fall Break! The school will re-open on Thursday, November 13th.
A message from Mr. Vooys:
Hello West Springs Families,
It has been great to see the kids back in the music room. Here are a few highlights from the last few weeks in music class.
Grade 4: Learning a song based on "In Flanders Fields", and interpreting/explaining the meaning of the lyrics, and learning a bit about Dr. John McRae, and what inspired him to write his poem.
Grade 3: Learning "Tomorrow" from the musical Annie, and practicing reading along with notes and words as we sing this song, talking about first and second endings to sections of a song with most classes.
Grade 2: Learning "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin' " from the musical Oklahoma, and learning that a "tie" ties or glues two notes together to make them into one longer note.
Grade 1: Learning "Do-Re-Mi" from The Sound of Music, and learning that a composer is someone that writes or makes their own music.
Kindergarten: Working on our singing voices through singing games like "Doggie, Doggie" and moving creatively to music.
Choir news:
We've started choir with interested Grade 3s and 4s during lunch recess on Wednesdays. I am planning to do a makeup choir practice on Thursday November 13 at lunch recess, as we'll miss practice on the 12th due to fall break. We still have room for a few more kids if any students missed the day where I handed out permission slips. Just tell your child to ask me for one.
I hope that you and your families enjoy your fall break.
Best, Mr. Peter Vooys

A message from our WSSDA:
Our biggest fundraiser is fast approaching and we are in URGENT need of your help. The Casino Fundraiser is our schools' biggest fundraiser, which brings in over $60,000 for the school and our kids. If we do not fill our volunteer obligation, we will not get another casino going forward.
The Casino is fast approaching on November 13, 14, 17 & 18, 2025 at Cowboys Casino and Elbow River Casino.
If you have never worked a casino before, there is nothing to it! No experience is necessary and anyone over the age of 18 is eligible to work. Plus, there is a FREE meal included with every shift.
There are multiple shifts still available, especially on the Monday and Tuesday, with a range of times.
The shifts that MUST be filled are:
Thursday, November 13
6:45pm - 3:30am – Chip Runner x 2
11:00pm – 3:30am – Count Room x 3
Friday, November 14
11:00am – 7:30pm – General Manager, Banker
Monday, November 17th
6:45pm - 3:30am – Cashier, Chip Runner, General Manager, Banker
11:00pm – 3:30am - Count Room
Tuesday, November 18th
6:45pm - 3:30am - Cashier, Chip Runner x 2, Banker
11:00pm - 3:30am - Count Room x 3
There are also various back-up volunteer shifts that remain – it is helpful if people could also fill those. These volunteers are only needed if someone else has to cancel their shift at the last moment.
Please follow this link to sign up. This fundraiser is not possible without your help, and ALL shifts need to be filled.
Thank you in advance for your help!
