Music Notes
Hello West Springs Families,
I hope that you've had a great week! We had a great time taking the Grade 2s and 3s to see the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra as they performed excerpts from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, along with narration and illustrations from Canadian actor/artist Judd Palmer. Thank you to our parent volunteers for helping make the experience so smooth!
A quick note, we will be having a whole-school concert on the evenings of April 22 and 23. Because we are a very large school, we'll be splitting the school so that about half the classes perform on each night. I am planning to have both the Grade 1/2 and Grade 3/4 choirs perform on both nights. More specifics and logistics will be shared in early April, but I wanted to just send a quick notice that this will be happening, as many of your children have probably mentioned that I've started to talk about this in music class and/or choir.
Here are a few recent learning highlights from each grade:
Kindergarten: Working on our song "Animals in Our Neighbourhood" for the late April concert.
Grade 1: Creating harmony using boomwhackers, and trying to sing a familiar song ("Grand Old Duke of York"), while playing boomwhackers.
Grade 2: Preparing for and debriefing our Swan Lake field trip. Working with boomwhackers to create harmony/chords and adding boomwhacker harmony to a silly song "Dum Dum Ditty".
Grade 3: Preparing for and debriefing our Swan Lake field trip. Learning "Frere Jacques" and singing it in English and French as a two part round, learning that by singing as a round they are singing in harmony.
Grade 4: Working on ukulele skills, and chord transitions between C, F, and A Minor chords.
Conferences
Next week will be conferences. As I am part-time this year, I will be present on Thursday night, but will not be present on Friday morning. On Thursday night I'll be in my usual spot in the gathering space and will be happy to chat and speak about your child's learning in music, on a drop-in basis. If you have booked your conference with your child's classroom teacher on Friday morning and you would like to touch base with me, please let me know and we can set something up in the near future.
Have a great weekend! Best, Mr. Peter Vooys
