Dear Families

Report Cards

Report Cards for the first semester will be available for you to view in your MyCBE account from Monday January 27.

This year you will notice that the Achievement Indicators (numbers 1 – 4) are the same as in previous years, however the format for comments has changed.

Each student will receive a comment on an Area of Strength and an Area of Growth for reading, writing and mathematics.  These comments follow a CBE wide written template and are written specifically to the Alberta Curriculum and classroom assessment criteria.

For more information about the Alberta Curriculum outcomes written for parents, please use the website and follow the links for your child’s grade.  https://curriculum.learnalberta.ca/parents/en/home

If you have questions about your child’s report card, please email your child’s teacher.

If you have questions about accessing your MyCBE account please call Christine or Peggy in our office.

How to access your report cards

Parents and guardians can log in to MyCBE to view student information including report cards, comments from your child’s teacher, assignments and grades and attendance information. For best access to information, log in to the MyCBE portal instead of using the PowerSchool app.

Need Help? Check out these videos for more information on how to log in and navigate the portal when you have more than one child attending CBE schools.

Music Notes

Hello West Springs Parents,

I hope you’ve had a great week. I have written a few notes on music grades for report cards, which follow.

There are two music grades on your child’s report card:

 1) Understands and applies elements of music.

This includes the majority of music theory and performance outcomes, which includes such outcomes as:

-singing in tune

-reading and performing rhythms

-identifying note durations (grades 3 and 4 this term)

-reading melodies including various solfege notes depending on the grade

(Grade 1: So-Mi, La will be added later this year. Grade 2: Do, Re, Mi, So, La, Grade 3: Do, Re, Mi, So, La.  Low-So, Low-La and High-Do during the second term. Grade 4: All of the above, and Fa and Ti will be touched on later this year).

 2) Listens and responds critically to music.

This includes any outcomes related to listening to music, such as:

-listening for the sounds of different instruments

-listening for tempo (how fast the beat of a song is) and dynamics (how loud or soft a musical sound is)

-listening for the sound of different emotional qualities within music

-listening for and identifying low and high notes, and for long and short sounds and silences (Grade 1)

-listening for the rise and fall of melody (Grade 2)

-listening for major and minor chords (Grade 3)

-developing awareness of the meaning of a song through its words (Grade 4).

Most students will not receive report card comments for music, but for those who have received comments, most of my comments relate to “Understands and applies elements of music”, relating specifically to an area of strength and the most significant area for growth related to this report card outcome.

The vast majority of the kids at WSS have a positive attitude towards music, and helping to build this attitude is the great organizing principle behind my decisions as a music teacher. However, due to the curriculum, a good attitude, while it is generally a precursor to success, is not a major part of assessing understanding and skills in music class.

If you have any questions, I’m happy to chat.

Have a great weekend,

Mr. Peter Vooys
