National Indigenous History Month

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, an opportunity to honour the histories, cultures, and resilience of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples across Canada. We acknowledge the contributions of Indigenous peoples to our society, their enduring cultures, languages, and traditions, and their incredible resilience in the face of historical and ongoing challenges.

 National Indigenous History Month

School Council – We had our final school council meeting for the year – thank you to all the executive members past and present, WSSDA executive, fun lunch, casino and yearbook organizers for all their time and efforts to support our school this year!

Digital Citizenship – Ms. MacMillan visited all the classes this week to talk about being a good digital citizen.  Please ask your child to share about our 2 goals at West Springs; Be safe and be balanced when using technology.

Artists at WSS! Our grade 3 students became artists this week and made ducks out of clay which were inspired by the ducks in our wetlands. The grade 1s worked on canvas last week to create incredible bear paintings.

Bike Safety – please remind your children to keep their helmets on while riding to and from school as well as stopping at the crosswalk to look carefully to ensure the cars have stopped before crossing the street. Remember: STOP, LOOK, LOCK

Library Books - Please remember to return all library books to school this week.

Volunteer Appreciation – Thank you to all the parents and guardians who have helped make our special activities and trips successful this year. Please join us between 9:30am – 10:30am on Wednesday at the school so we can show our appreciation.

CBE Bus Registration – due by June 16

Registration for transportation for 2024-2025 is now open.  It is important that families register for bussing prior to June 16, in order to ensure they are confirmed for transportation for the beginning of the year.  If you miss the registration deadline, it is most likely there will be delays (of up to 6 weeks) for transportation being available for your child(ren).

This week in music

Hello WSS Parents,

I hope that you’ve had a great week.

Next week in most Grade 1-3 classes we’ll be having class talent shows. These are an opportunity for the kids to share their musical skill with their classmates in a safe, low-pressure environment. Grade 1s were told “if you take piano lessons and you’d like to share one of your pieces with your class, you can do that”, but as the kids get a little older, I give them a bit more freedom to choose what they’d like to perform: for instance, if they have a song they love to sing along with or dance to, and would like to perform it, and I’ve also allowed skits and art pieces in Grade 3 and 4. Grade 4 had a talent show earlier this year, and are very busy wrapping up our ukulele learning and getting ready for the end of year assembly.

Monday June 10: Mr. Alfredo (1), Ms. Mason (1), Ms. Gandar (1), Ms. Pajot (2), Ms. Toews (2)

Tuesday June 11: Ms. Lawford (1), Mrs. Azmier (1), Mr. Neily (3), Ms. Moxon (3), Ms. Delongchamp (3)

Wednesday June 12: Mrs. Dziadyk (2), Mrs. Dewar (2), Ms. Pritchard (2), Mr. Fong (3), Mr. Nikiforuk (3), Ms. Baskerville (3)

Thanks,

Mr. Vooys
